Why am I getting disconnected from a library database?
Answer
If you are having trouble staying connected to a library database after not interacting with the database (conducting a search, clicking a link, etc.), look below to discover how many minutes of inactivity must occur before the database vendor will close your browser session -- or -- click the "Ask A Question" tab to the right of the screen to contact us.
- Britannica Online - will not disconnect
- CD Sheet Music (Library Music Source) - will not disconnect
- Credo Reference - will not disconnect
- EBSCOhost databases - 120 minutes
- JSTOR - 30 minutes
- NewsBank (America's News) - will not disconnect
- OpinionArchives - 20 minutes
- OVID - 15 minutes
- Oxford (Who's Who) - 20 minutes
- Oxford (Grove's Music) - 30 minutes
- ProjectMUSE - 120 minutes
- ProQuest - 30 minutes
- Sage (CQ Weekly) - 5 minutes
- Springer - will not disconnect
- Taylor & Francis - 60 minutes for computers but 30 minutes for mobile
- University of Chicago Press - 4 hours
- Wiley - unknown
To keep a session from disconnecting, return to your database and click on something in the database or conduct a search. Interacting with the database will keep your session "alive" and you will not automatically be disconnected according to the above list.
We have asked all our database vendors to send us the session timeouts that apply so that we can replace "unknown" with the exact minutes of their automatic disconnect.
